چکیده

Two different microstructural architectures featuring multiple length scales have been created in the thermoelectric Mg2(SixSn1 x) system. The first one combines the nano-grain microstructure, characteristic of rapid solidification, with a large-scale pseudo-periodic pattern in one direction. The second is a layered structure in which the composition and microstructural scale vary from layer to layer. The microstructural variability is obtained by two different processing methods, in the first from the consolidation of melt-spun Mg2(SixSn1 x) alloy and in the second the sequential thermal treatment of a diffusion couple between Mg2Si and Mg2Sn. In both cases the microstructural features are consistent with the predictions of the solidification and diffusion paths followed in each process. & 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Electron transport modeling and energy filtering for efficient thermoelectric Mg2Si1-xSnx solid solutions

Electron transport modeling and energy filtering for efficient thermoelectric Mg2Si1-xSnx solid solutions" (2014). We present a comprehensive electron transport model to analyze thermoelectric properties of both n-and p-type bulk Mg 2 Si 1-x Sn x (0 x 1) solid solutions. A temperature-dependent multiparabolic bands model is used to describe the band structures of the alloys, and the transport p...

Type VIII Si based clathrates: prospects for a giant thermoelectric power factor.

Although clathrate materials are known for their small thermal conductivity, they have not shown a large thermoelectric power factor so far. We present the band structures of type VIII Si, Ge, and Sn clathrates as well as the alkali and alkaline-earth intercalated type VIII Si clathrates. Our calculations revealed that this group of materials has potentially large power factors due to the exist...

Nanostructure design for drastic reduction of thermal conductivity while preserving high electrical conductivity

The design and fabrication of nanostructured materials to control both thermal and electrical properties are demonstrated for high-performance thermoelectric conversion. We have focused on silicon (Si) because it is an environmentally friendly and ubiquitous element. High bulk thermal conductivity of Si limits its potential as a thermoelectric material. The thermal conductivity of Si has been r...

Epitaxial growth of two-dimensional stanene.

Following the first experimental realization of graphene, other ultrathin materials with unprecedented electronic properties have been explored, with particular attention given to the heavy group-IV elements Si, Ge and Sn. Two-dimensional buckled Si-based silicene has been recently realized by molecular beam epitaxy growth, whereas Ge-based germanene was obtained by molecular beam epitaxy and m...
